Day 1: Moshi to Shira Gate to Simba Camp
Embark on your adventure with a scenic drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate, a journey of approximately 4 hours. After completing the registration process, we will continue our ascent along a steep path to the Shira Gate, where our hike officially begins. As we trek through lush shrubs and towering giant heather, we'll make our way to Simba Camp. Here, you'll enjoy a hearty dinner and a restful overnight stay, preparing you for the exciting days ahead on your Kilimanjaro climbing expedition.
Day 2: Simba Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Day 2 is dedicated to acclimatization with a leisurely trek through the scenic grassy moorland and fascinating volcanic rock formations of the Shira Plateau. Our route will take us to the Shira Cathedral, an impressive rock buttress surrounded by dramatic spires and pinnacles. As we explore this unique geological wonder, you'll be treated to stunning views and a chance to adapt to the altitude. We will then proceed to Shira 2 Camp, where you'll enjoy a delicious dinner and a comfortable overnight stay, preparing you for the next leg of your Kilimanjaro climbing adventure.
Day 3: Moir Hut
Day 3 brings us to the remarkable Moir Hut, renowned for offering some of the best opportunities to explore the majestic slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. Our journey will include a visit to the historic Fisher Camp, where we’ll enjoy a well-deserved lunch and continue our acclimatization process. The day’s hike provides stunning vistas and a chance to adapt to the altitude, ensuring a rewarding experience as we advance on your Kilimanjaro climbing expedition.
Day 4: Moir Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
On Day 4, we’ll embark on an exhilarating trek from Moir Camp towards the impressive Lava Tower, a striking 300-foot tall volcanic rock formation. The hike will take us east up a ridge and then southeast to this geological marvel. After exploring the Lava Tower, we’ll descend through the scenic and somewhat eerie Senecio Forest to reach Barranco Camp at an altitude of 13,000 feet. This day is designed to enhance acclimatization by spending time at high altitude before descending, ensuring your body adjusts effectively to the changing conditions on your Kilimanjaro climbing journey.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
On Day 5, after a hearty breakfast, we’ll embark on an exciting descent into the ravine at the base of the majestic Great Barranco Wall. We’ll then tackle the steep ascent up the Barranco Wall— a non-technical climb of nearly 900 feet that offers spectacular views. Once we reach the top, we’ll traverse a series of undulating hills and valleys before making a sharp descent into the picturesque Karanga Valley. The day concludes with a final steep climb to Karanga Camp. This shorter, yet invigorating day is designed to aid in acclimatization, ensuring you’re well-prepared for the next stages of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
On Day 6, we’ll depart from Karanga Camp and head towards the junction with the Mweka Trail. Our route will take us up through rocky terrain to reach Barafu Camp. This location marks the completion of the Southern Circuit and offers breathtaking summit views from various vantage points. From here, you’ll get a glimpse of both the Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. At Barafu Camp, we’ll set up camp, rest, and enjoy an early dinner in preparation for the challenging summit day ahead on your Kilimanjaro climbing journey.
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
On Day 7, we’ll start our ascent from Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak around midnight. This is the most challenging part of your Kilimanjaro climbing journey, with extreme cold and wind. We’ll climb in the dark, taking brief breaks. As we near Stella Point (18,900 ft), you’ll witness a breathtaking sunrise over Mawenzi Peak. Reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, is a triumphant moment. We’ll then descend to Mweka Camp, passing through Barafu for lunch. The rocky trail can be tough on your knees, so trekking poles are useful. Mweka Camp, located in the lush upper forest, may see mist or rain in the afternoon. We’ll wrap up the day with a celebratory dinner and a restful sleep.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi
On the final day of your Kilimanjaro adventure, we’ll descend from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your well-earned summit certificate. As you descend, you may encounter some wet and muddy trails, adding to the sense of accomplishment. After reaching Mweka Gate, a short drive will take you to Mweka Village, where a vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi. This marks the end of an unforgettable 8-day journey via the Shira Route. Say your goodbyes to your dedicated mountain crew and enjoy a warm welcome back at your hotel.
