The Shira Route is one of the most scenic trails on Mount Kilimanjaro, approaching from the west. This lesser-known trail begins near Shira Ridge and closely follows the Lemosho Route, an enhanced version of Shira. The Shira Route offers trekkers a breathtaking journey across the entire Shira Plateau, providing panoramic views during a pleasant, relatively flat hike. As you traverse Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field via the Southern Circuit, the final ascent leads to the summit from Barafu Camp. The descent follows the scenic Mweka Route. Although the 7-day Shira Route trek offers a thrilling adventure, it is slightly more challenging due to limited acclimatization compared to the 8-day Shira Route. However, the experience is well worth the effort!

Your unforgettable Kilimanjaro journey starts here!
Our adventure begins with a departure from Moshi towards the Londorossi Gate, a journey that takes approximately 4 hours. After completing the registration process, we drive up a steep path to the Shira Gate, where our exciting hike on the Shira Route commences. The trail leads us through lush shrubs and giant heather until we reach Simba Camp, where we will enjoy a hearty dinner and rest overnight. This day marks the start of your unforgettable Kilimanjaro journey via the scenic and less-traveled Shira Route.
On Day 2 of your 7-Day Shira Route Kilimanjaro Climb, we focus on acclimatization while exploring the stunning landscapes. The day begins with a journey through the grassy moorland and fascinating volcanic rock formations of the Shira Plateau. We’ll take a scenic route to the Shira Cathedral, a majestic rock buttress encircled by dramatic spires and pinnacles. We’ll conclude our day at Shira 2 Camp, where we’ll enjoy a delicious dinner and restful overnight stay, setting the stage for the next leg of your memorable Kilimanjaro adventure.
On Day 3 of your 7-Day Shira Route Kilimanjaro Adventure, you'll embark on a thrilling journey eastwards up a ridge towards the iconic Lava Tower, a stunning 300 ft volcanic rock formation. After soaking in the dramatic views, we'll descend through the enchanting Senecio Forest to Barranco Camp at 13,000 ft. This day's trek, which begins and ends at the same altitude, is crucial for acclimatization and prepares you for the challenges ahead.
On Day 4 of your 7-Day Shira Route Kilimanjaro Expedition, we’ll begin with breakfast before descending into a ravine to the base of the majestic Great Barranco Wall. We then ascend this impressive 900 ft cliff without technical skills, followed by a trek across picturesque hills and valleys. Afterward, we’ll descend sharply into Karanga Valley and complete a final steep climb to reach Karanga Camp. This shorter day is specifically designed for optimal acclimatization.
On Day 5 of your 7-Day Shira Route Kilimanjaro Adventure, we depart from Karanga Camp and head towards Barafu Camp. As we make our way, we’ll encounter the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail and navigate up to the rocky terrain of Barafu Hut. This pivotal point marks the end of the Southern Circuit and rewards us with breathtaking summit views, including the majestic Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. At Barafu Camp, we’ll set up camp, rest, and savor an early dinner to gear up for the exhilarating summit day ahead.
Early in the morning (around midnight), we will embark on the exhilarating climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. This challenging stage is the most demanding part of the trek, as we ascend through the dark, battling the cold and wind. As we approach Stella Point (18,900 ft), the breathtaking sunrise over Mawenzi Peak will be our reward. Finally, we’ll reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Kilimanjaro and the entire African continent. After summiting, we’ll descend to Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch. The rocky trail can be tough on the knees, so trekking poles are recommended. Mweka Camp, nestled in the upper forest, may experience mist or rain in the afternoon. We’ll conclude our adventure with a final dinner and a well-deserved rest.
On our final day, we’ll descend from Mweka Camp to the Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your well-earned summit certificates, celebrating your achievement of conquering Mount Kilimanjaro via the stunning Shira Route. Be prepared for potentially wet and muddy conditions as we traverse the lower elevations—protective gear will keep you comfortable. From the gate, a short drive will take us to Mweka Village, where a vehicle will be ready to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi. As we say goodbye to your mountain crew, reflect on the incredible 7-day adventure and the breathtaking views that made this trek unforgettable. This marks the end of your epic journey. We hope to welcome you back soon for another adventure!
