The 3 Day Mount Meru Climbing is the best for acclimatization prior to Mount Kilimanjaro climbing; or a spectacular trek for those not competent to climb mount Kilimanjaro. You will hike past wildlife, the landscape is spectacular, and sunrise on the summit has Kilimanjaro as the backdrop. The Mountain is the fifth highest peak in Africa and is the second highest mountain in Tanzania at 4,568m. Mount Meru is located within Arusha National Park, Tanzania’s gem. This prime location gives trekkers the chance to spot some of the wildlife that inhabits the area. Because Mount Meru is located in Arusha National Park, hikers must climb with an armed ranger due to the wide range of wildlife living on the mountain. On the lower slopes of the mountain, hikers are more likely to see elephants, giraffes, and buffalo! On this 3 days mount Meru hiking itinerary, you will ascend the trail following the north rim of the volcano’s crater along a dramatic ridge line. Throughout the 3 days Mount Meru climb, hikers sleep in designated huts along the trail. Hikers reach the summit as the sun is rising and they will have spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro and of the Mount Meru Crater. The Momella lakes, forest and Ngurdoto Crater can all be visited in the course of a half-day outing at the beginning or end of an extended northern safari.
While this 3 days itinerary aims to reach the summit of Mount Meru, but it is not an easy peak to summit. To reach the top (almost 15,000 feet), there is some scrambling on rocks in the dark and at high altitude. You should be prepared for at least 10 hours of hiking on summit day. For an easier hike, you can climb just to Rhino Point for sunrise overlooking Kilimanjaro, and then descend. But do not worry as our experienced guide will do the best to assist you fulfill your dream.
- This 3 days and 2 nights on Mount Meru trek begins with a drive from Arusha or Moshi at around 8:00am to Momella Gate. After a short time of registration at the Gate your 3 days trek on Mount Meru begin with full armed ranger escorting you. This is because you can encounter wild animals including elephants, zebras, and giraffe, monkeys, antelope, and often elephants along the route. You can have your lunch at the famous “Fig tree”. By mid-afternoon, you will have your first close views of the towering cliffs and the Ash Cone. You will arrive at Miriakampa Hut, in time to enjoy the afternoon sun and beautiful views over the surrounding plains towards Kilimanjaro. Dinner and overnight at Miriakamba Hut.

On the second day of 3 days mount Meru hiking tour you will wake up early and have a hearty breakfast. Begin the trek towards Saddle Hut (3,570 meters). This trek will take you slowly along the ridge for a spectacular view of the Meru Crater and the eye-catching Ash Cone. In the afternoon, embark on an acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820 meters). Enjoy the breathtaking sunset views from the summit of little Meru before returning to Saddle Hut. Wake up around midnight (12:00am)for a light breakfast and start the summit attempt. Trek towards the summit of Mount Meru (4,566 meters) under the starlit sky. Where it takes 1 hour steep climb to RHINO POINT, (3,800m / 12,467ft), then continue hiking along a ridge of ash and rock to reach COBRA POINT (4,350m / 14,272ft). The summit of SOCIALIST PEAK (4,566 m) is an hour further on a steep path. Depending on your speed, you can enjoy sunrise at Cobra Point or the summit. Reach the summit and marvel at the spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscape. The views are stunning: the cliffs of the Crater rim, the Ash Cone rising from the crater floor, Kilimanjaro floating on the morning clouds, and the Rift Valley. Take memorable photos and celebrate your achievement.
Descend back to Saddle Hut for a rest and lunch.
Continue the descend to Momella Gate, passing through the montane forest.
